My beauty journey has inevitably brought me into the MAKEUP ARENA (Dun Dun DUUUUN!), and all I can say is THANK GOD FOR YOUTUBE! I literally spent my 20’s and 30’s only wearing Oil of Olay moisturizer and mascara. So, this is a BIG challenge for me. If you’re clueless on where to start with that 40 year old face of yours, then you’re in the right place!
If you’re a busy mom in your 30’s or 40’s looking for a quick makeup routine OR how-to’s for makeup newbies, then these videos have you covered!
YouTube Makeup Tutorials
When I say I don’t really wear makeup, I’m not joking. Seriously. I still have the blush, eye liner, and BB Cream I bought for my wedding day…10 years ago. Even then, I still had a friend picking out everything I needed.
Seriously, sometimes I wonder how I made it through my teens and 20’s (eeeek…and 30’s) without a clue about makeup. It’s sort of embarrassing. But, I’m ready to dip my big toe into the crazy makeup waters that are swirling wildly about us these days!
YouTube has the BEST video tutorials for makeup, but it is VERY overwhelming. I focused on MINIMAL, NATURAL, and (of course) QUICK. After LOADS of scouring YOUTUBE, these are my top picks for over 40 moms.
Best 5 Minute Makeup Tutorials By Professional Women Who Know Their Shit
Bobbi Brown Cosmetics (none of which I own, but now I want to!) has a great tutorial from Kim Soane. It’s an easy 5 minute makeup how-to for middle aged ladies. She demonstrates how she would put her makeup on while riding the train to work! LOVE IT.
She’s clearly got more skills than I ever will! But, I loved that she didn’t have a brush and sponge for every step. She just used her hands and one brush the whole time.
Plus, who knew eyeshadow comes in a STICK? The Bobbi Brown cream eyeshadow stick is now on my list of must tries! (See below. Also, after a little digging, I found a shout out on Allure for this pretty amazing DUPE!)
(FYI, she also has her own channel Beauty by Soane with LOADS of great how-to’s for us!).
Lisa Eldridge has a great 5 minute makeup tutorial that gives you a real-time application of her daily routine. She’s clearly got the model face, but don’t be fooled. She’s super relatable, and not overly fussy.
Like Kim Soane, she definitely has the background in the industry to know what she’s talking about, so it’s definitely worth your time. Plus, she also has a load of other tutorials if you like her style.
Deep Dive Over 35 Makeup Tutorials from Grown Ass Women
The Pampered Wolf channel has a great line of videos that are perfect for moms over 30 who want to get down and dirty with makeup. She walks you through loads of concealer, foundation, and eye makeup tips that are specific to our age group.
She’s self-deprecating, honest, and a joy to watch. Trust me, you’ll learn a lot from her!
Risa Does Makeup is also a really in depth makeup channel that’s got a LOT to offer us over 35’ers. Like the under eye concealer Do’s & Don’ts video below. Great pointers even if I’m no where near ready for the full on GLAM these ladies can both dole out.
Marnie Goldberg also has a series that’s SUPER in depth for us 40 year old mamas called Grown-Ass Women Series.
Again, these are way more advanced than where I’m at currently. But, these ladies really put the GLAM ON! And, they clearly know their way around a makeup isle.
So, if you’re gonna do some research, it might as well be from ladies in your age bracket that know a-thing-or-two about a-thing-or-two, amiright?
YouTube Makeup Highs & Lows
So, let’s recap. YouTube is flooded with makeup tutorials, which can be overwhelming. And, the bulk of them appear to be by gorgeous girls in their 20’s. That’s not going to end well for your middle aged face (or your psyche).
But, not to worry! My picks for you are either women who are professionals and know their shit inside and out OR women who have faces that look like ours and who at least seem to know their shit.
You can go ahead and dip that big toe into the makeup pool. The water is FINE! Before you know it…you’ll be ready for a deep dive!
I’d love to learn more about your favorite YouTube beauty channels! Post them in the comments so we can all check them out!
